PET: tool of wonder and limitless imagination

As we find ourselves just before Christmas, at the end of the year 2016, I have all the more reason to share with you some reflections, not so much about the year that has gone by, however interesting, but particularly about the future of healthcare in the Netherlands and outside it. To venture into a new paradigm for delivering quality healthcare, we cannot help but start with amazing ourselves about the possibilities that are presently available. The impressive progress we have made over the past century to prolong our life spans was mainly due to a few practical and medical innovations: hygiene improved when proper toilets came in, and antibiotics and anaesthetics were discovered, helping to combat large-scale infections and allow operations to be performed. The challenge we are facing today, however, can no longer be accomplished along these lines but requires a different mindset, a different way of collaborating, and another way of deploying manpower and resources.

A True History Full of Romance

In the Netherlands, marriage between local ‘white’ women and foreign men, particularly men with another skin colour, was unimaginable for a very long time. A woman who brought a ‘coloured’ man home was asking for trouble. The Dutch were used to marrying within their own group, even if ‘their own group’ might refer to different things: in the first half of the nineteenth century, it was considered important for the future husband to be of the same class, and, after that, it was his religious persuasion that was paramount. As of about 1900, cultural, economic, and social life became increasingly segregated along religious lines, and people were used to working, playing sports, making music, courting, and getting married with fellow believers. Strangers did not fit into this compartmentalized world and were even regarded with suspicion, if not horror.

Vital Democracy

Vital Democracy outlines a theory of democracy in action, based on four elementary forms of democracy – pendulum, consensus, voter and participatory democracy – that are thoroughly analysed, compared and related to both the literature and the real world of democracy. Just like a few primary colours produce an array of shades, a few basic models of democracy appear, the author argues, to constitute a wide range of democratic variants in real life. Focusing on tried and tested democratic institutions, Frank Hendriks shows that the four models of democracy – with their divergent patterns of leadership, citizenship and governance, their inherent strengths and weaknesses – are never purely instantiated. He argues that wherever democracy is practiced with some level of success, it is always as hybrid democracy, thereby challenging those democratic reformers and theorists that have inspired the quest for democratic purity.

It is the goal of Future For Nature to protect the most vulnerable species in wilderness areas that provide for life’s most essential environmental conditions, such as oxygen, climate regulation, and freshwater. Rich Man – Poor Man

Re-enactors are photogenic, but photographing mediaeval people, of course, is a glaring anachronism. During the festival, people in 600-year-old attire find themselves walking modern streets lined by contemporary people taking many thousands of digital pictures. These occasional photographers mean to capture the past, but their cameras register the present. The eye is merciful; fantasy is pliable; but the lens is implacable. Illusion is undone by inescapable reality: the 21st century cannot be erased. Photographer Stef Verstraaten has succeeded in partially bridging this gap between the medium and the image and between the 15th and the 21st centuries. He made up his mind to undertake what could not be achieved on the festival streets: to isolate the participants and eliminate their setting and background. He designed a mobile studio of considerable dimensions, custom-made for this project, allowing him to fully control the backdrop wherever he took his photographs. The result is striking. The re-enactors coincide perfectly with their mediaeval personas without there being any distracting interference.

Do ut des, or ‘I give so you may give’, is the adage that constitutes the principle of reciprocal relations in past and present societies. This social mechanism is a crucial agent of social bonding and power, which is at the heart of the issues explored in this volume: gift giving, memoria (or liturgical commemoration), and conflict management in the medieval Low Countries. Gift giving established and sustained socio-political and religious networks. The liturgical commemoration of the living and the dead by monks, canons, nuns, and other clerics likewise resulted from reciprocal gifts and agreements between laymen and the religious. Even the management of disputes in the Central Middle Ages was based, above anything else, on giving each other one’s due. Reciprocity, therefore, as expressed by the phrase do ut des, strings together the contributions in this volume.
